Lever Shocks

Hello. Looking for some help regarding lever shock oil filling. Have 62 BT7 and have never checked/filled lever shocks. Purchased proper shock oil from Moss and was able to remove fill plugs on the two lever shocks in the front. Proceded to remove rear seats to access rear lever shocks but do not see a fill plug on top as is with the front. Only see a top plate with 6 screws attached. Do these rear lever shocks require oil and if so, where do I fill them? Thanks for any help.

Hi,

There is a small plug on the side. Right below the plate w/6 screws and next to the shaft the lever arm is attached to. IIRC it's metric, maybe 13mm? Fill until a small ammount dribbles back out. One suggestion - if the shocks are completely dry inside you may need to undo the end links and slowly pump the shock arm thru several full sweeps to purge air out of the shock. Alternatively, fill with oil and check again after a few miles of driving - if there was air trapped it will eventually work it's way out and the fluid level will be down a bit again.

It has been my experience that when they are empty it means they are leaking and whatever you put in will just dribble out over a few days. Your experience may vary.

Thanks so much. I originally did not see the plug on the side. Will be filling them this week. Hopefully they arent dry.

Be careful to not overfill them. That will cause the seals to leak when the shocks heat up in use. And when that happens road dirt and grime will be attracted to that area and cause the packings to wear as well as the shafts to wear.

The actual wrench size is 1/4" Whitworth. 9/16" SAE will neatly round off the plug. 13mm filed a bit will work.

There should be no reason to add oil to the shocks, unless there is visible evidence that they are, or have, leaked. The oil doesn't evaporate or burn.

If they have leaked, I know a guy that can help.
