TR2/3/3A TR3 lever shocks

Hi all,

You have been so helpful in the past I am now sure the knowledge base that is on this forum surpasses all manuals and other printed matter that is available. Now that I have built up your egos maybe you can help with this question: I am redoing the rear lever shocks on my 60 TR3A and after removing the plug and cleaning the inside and outside I am curious on how to fill it. After replacing the plug do I remove the top cover and refill it, if so, how much do I use and should I work the lever while doing it?

Auggie - when I did mine, I used an old fashioned "oil can" with a flexible neck. Put the tip at the fill hole, then kept pumping 'til the hydraulic oil started dribbling out. That means "full".

I use a big hypodermic syringe from the local farm store that is used for horse medicines. No needle, just the plastic part. Also good for carbs.

I use a funnel with a length of 1/4" irrigation line on the end. Whittled the side of the 1/4" hose a bit to allow air to escape as the thing filled.

If it isn't obvious, I think all these techniques are filling thru that plug you removed from the upper corner, not by removing the top cover.

If they continue to lose oil it might be time for a rebuild, and Peter and crew at NOS Import will take care you for very little cost. Hopefully the shocks are fine, but worth tucking away just in case.
