weber 45 dcoe

i am being given a chance to own a weber 45 dcoe carb w/manifold for a mgb. it would be a trade for my hs4 su's. all comments, and pros and cons please.

I've never owned one but have been told that they are a pain to get set up right and that an unmodified engine will never be able to take advantage of it. Unless you have heavily modified your engine (cam, porting and polishing) and have a weber mechanic who owes you a favor, I'd hang on to the SUs. they do look cool though

I ran a weber sidedraft on my previous engine, my morgan buddy rebuilt it for the stock B engine, It ran fine, maybe would have run even better with mods. Footnote: It ALWAYS started, hot or cold, and there was no choke whatsoevever. If it was cold weather, I did have to let it sit and warm up for a few minutes. There is a manual for setup with a stock B engine, and I could dig through my files if you want a look.

i ran that carb/manifold on a 60 mga, just was much more fun at 2500-4500rpm, pulled like a v8
probably would have turned the tires over,, but
i didnt want to tear any wire wheels. had to make
a k/n air filter fit cut down high velocity stacks
not alot of clerance with the wheel well. one other thing was the manifold/carb gasket that came with the set was a borg-warner and the rubber
went bad causing a miss in the engine just after
hitting a bump(thats why the guy was selling the car cheap it drove him crazy!) i thought that was the problem, but didnt tell him untill i bought the car and had it fixed(with a new shop made gasket) i need to get one runing again and have some fun!

I think downdrafts work better on a stock late engine. A sidedraft might be ok on your car, but I think they are too much for the rubber bumper cars. They seem to work better on the earlier cars.

idled fine, started great! when you pull the choke cable (carb enrichment) you will have to
get the hang of it, colder more warm/less)
had some crud that would get into the jets but
was easy to clean(small cap with wing nut)
also the stock fuel pump was to strong? used a
fuel pressure regulator, dont remember what it was set for???? i sold the car 10-11yrs ago
had not thought of the pressure regulator until now

by the way i use a sun 1115 engine analyzer to check/setup/tune up my engines so they start like
they are supposed too. bought a couple of the sun
machines at auction for 100$ a piece, cleaned and
tested them(my cousin has a 1015 at his shop sun maintains) sold the uglier of the 2 for 1000$ saved the better one! it does help to have the right tool!!!!
