Removing timing cover

I'm working on removing the timing cover to at least replace the gasket and seal and see how the chain/sprockets look, etc.
Is there an easy way to loosen the pulley bolt? I have the proper 1 5/16 wrench but the pulley of course wants to turn counter clockwise. Any tips on this as the Haynes book is no help.

I have the cylinder head off and am happy to report that it looks great.

Thanks. Again.

If you want to tempt the safety fates you can block the wrench against a strong body part (with a 2x4 for padding) and hit the starter motor. This usually breaks it free.

With the ignition disabled, but since you have the head off you already have noting to spark with, I added that in there for the poor soul who may have tried this with everything hooked up /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I just went through this -- Hap and Bill have the method if the engine is in the car. Me, I bought an air compressor and impact wrench, took that bolt of in 5 seconds. Of course, at that point my engine was sitting on the floor...

Good luck!

ewww.

Wouldn't take long, tho. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif

On the inline engines doesn't the old method of driving a wooden wedge through the starter hole to lock the ring gear work?

Since the head is off you can cut equal lengths of rope, say 10' of 1/4" nylon, fill the 1 and 4 or 2 and 3 cylinders with the rope, reinstall the head without the push rods so you don't need to worry about the valves and rotate the engine until it locks up. This should allow you to loosen the bolt. Don't forget that there is a lock tab on the crank pulley bolt.

Ok, thanks for the help. There is no lock tab on the bolt which is one of many quirks I have found on the car so far.

They are a joke anyway, the locking tabs that is, I don't even use them , I just red locktite the crank bolt on.
