Alternative Fuel Pumps for a 420

I'm looking for suggestions for an alternative to the SU's. Need four for both 420's. Looking for function, not original. Thanks.

Why not fix the ones that you have? SU pumps are simple and reliable, and the pump the correct volume and pressure. I think that Burlen(sp?)Fuel Systems(in England) makes replacement diaphragms and point sets, and that is about all that ever goes wrong with them.Rebuilding them is easy enough, once you figure out how to set up the points. The first pump might take a little while, but by the fourth pump, you will be an expert.

The 1967 420 came out of a barn, no fuel pumps. The 1968 has one AC fuel pump and one with no name. Neither one is repairable.

Hi Ron, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif save yourself a lot of headache and replace the pumps with Electronic SU's.I know its a cost but it will pay off in the long run. Check Ebay for better prices.--Fwiw---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

I can recommend a very good pummp that NAPA supplies and works very well with the SU or ZS carburetors. It has the correct delivery pressure and is easy to install, reliable and inexpensive. I will get the NAPA part number and send it to you over the weekend. Jack

Try Jagnut Jaguar Spares in Luray Virginia. The number is 1 540 743 4037. Jack is quite knowlegable about parts for all sedans up to XJ6 series 3s, and has a large number of cars that he parts out, from Mk VII onwards. He probably has what you need. I am not affiliated in any way, but have been buying parts from him since the early 80s.

After trying every aftermarket pump available since the 70's , all of my British cars are back to SU pumps. If your supply lines have already been hacked , then the one from NAPA that looks like a fuel filter with electric leads should be a good choice...........Alan

RonT We are having a little winter ice storm this weekend. I'll get the NAPA part number and nomenclature on Monday. Sorry for the delay. Jack

Ron T, The fuel pump is available at NAPA stores for about $50 with a filter. Nomenclature is "univeresal electric fuel pump-Gerotor." There are two choices. One is 2-4psi rated at 30GPH and the NAPA part number is P60504. The other is 4-6psi at 30GPH and is P60430. They are quiet and dependable. For 4 or 6 cylinder motors, I recommend the 2-4psi. The 4-6psi would probably be OK for a 8 or 12 cylinder. I have used both with good results. Installation is quite easy, mount it in the vicinity of the OEM pump location. The filter goes upstream of the pump.
Best regards, Jack
