Removing steering column

To put my header in it looks like I'm going to need to pull the steering column. This is what the connection looks like from column to rack:

I removed the pinch bolt at the rack end and the bracket that holds the column to the car at the wheel end. The column doesn't want to budge yet.

Does the part with the pinch bolt stay with the rack or the column? Looks like I'm missing the felt bushing and the gaiter there as well (been this way since I bought it)? How do I get this bugger out?

The clamp that had the pinch bolt is part of the column. Apply some penetrating oil and tap a narrow screwdriver or some other wedge into the groove to spread it open a bit. At the same time use a small pry bar to push the clamp away from the rack. The clamp is cast iron so don't overdue spreading the groove or it might break. Shouldn't take much. It's a splined drive so the column has to be pulled straight off. Mine was pretty tight but once it's wedged open a bit that breaks loose whatever rust may be binding it. Have someone assist by supporting the column and pulling while you pry.

Use caution when prying the clamp away from the rack however, since the round ring immediately in front of the clamp is a plastic cover that houses the felt seal.

Thanks much for the advice -- it did the trick. Always important to know just where to place the BFH for proper effect. Progress report to follow...
