I am helping a friend with his TR6, very long story short. Is it at all possible that losing the thrust washers could cause the starter to fail to engage. Believe me we have covered all other bases and then some.

The thrust bearing thicknesses for the TR6 are about .100". If both fell out, the end float on the crank would be a little more then twice that...but, the would be movement both forward, which mean the starter pinion would be engaging MORE, and rearward, in which case the pinion would engage less. Normal starter pinion engagement is probably around 5/16"-3/8" (.312-.375) from all the starters I've seen here at work. If you subtract that .100" you will still get some engagement unless the starter pinion and flywheel gear is badly chewed up.

If you lost your thrust washers, that should be easy enough to check out by prying the front pulley back, and having someone then push in on the clutch. If those thrust washers aren't there, you will see about .200" movement...almost a 1/4". /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif

Are you hearing any grinding noise whaen you go to start the car?? What are the symptoms?? Did you check all of the flywheel teeth?? You can see them by removing the plate at the bottom of the tranny and having someone turn the engine from the front.

Edit: I don't know if you started this saga in another thread, but if you did, please cite it, or list all of the bases that you did cover.

a new one on me after 35 yrs,ring gear spinning on the flywheel. not loose to the touch,but not tight enough for a starter to spin the engine. there is no end to wierd crap a brit car can do.

That's a very unusual circumstance, but not unheard of. The ring gear is a press/shrink fit that generally doesn't give any problems. The only time I've seen it happen is if the ring gear cracks. You're most likely in for another flywheel with ring gear, as when that gear starts spinning on the flywheel, it most likely ground some of the surface where the press fit is. I wouldn't trust putting a new ring gear on that.
