Weber 32/36 DGEV Carb

I got one of these on my 1500. I did a few archive searches and found
the Weber Troubleshooting Guide
https://www.webercarbsdirect.com/v/vspfiles/images/Weber%20Trouble%20Shooting%20Guide.pdf
and a site with Weber Carb setup and idle adjust
https://www.carburetion.com/Weber/adjust.htm

But what I didn't find, was anything to do with choke cable adjustment or much to do with vacuum.

This is my 1st engine with a manual choke, and also my 1st Weber carb. So, I can't say I know much about it at all right now.

The issue is, when warm and at idle, I have to keep the choke cable pulled out about the thickness of a nickle to keep the idle at 800ish RPM and fairly smooth. It runs like a scared cat like this till about 4500 RPM then there's a nice little power drop off. I have not taken it over 5000 RPM, not that I really want to, just thinking of things that may help figure out my issue. If I push the choke cable all the way in it Idles about 600-700 RPM and really really rough, but does not stall, and is still great on throttle response. Following the Weber Trouble Shooting Guide, it talks about vacuum being the problem. I've never had any automatic tranny cars, any vacuum retard/advance distributors, or really anything that had much to do with vacuum. My previous VW engines all had centrifugal advance dizzys and temp controlled chokes, and all my Honda's were FI and electronic/computer controlled.

Anyways, I guess this is a 2 parter. Can someone school me, or point me to what to read on vacuum... and is it possible that my choke cable is pushing the choke back to partially closed when all the way in, thus only needing a minor adjustment?

I suppose if I was home I could go out and play with all this stuff hands on, but bored times call for lots of reading and the mind wonders.

Btw, I have no idea what cam is in this thing and the PO didn't either.

Thanks guys!

Definitly sounds like your idle is set a tad low. 8 to 900 is where mine is set. Skooch your idle up a bit. My DGV has a vacuum port on the side for the dizzy. Since my distributor is strictly mechanical the port has a cap on it. I will see if I can get a picture of it tonight.

The 4500 rpm power fall off sounds like a stock head. Port and polish will help that.

The choke flaps have a stop at wide open, I don't think that's the issue. I really think that you just need to set your idle up to 825 or so. I will definitly try for pictures tonight, depending on what my SWMBO has on the docket.

Now to adjust this on this carb, is it the Fast Idle Screw, Primary Idle Screw, or the Idle Mixture Screw?

Bottom of the last page on my 1st link if you don't know which is which. Not a very good picture though...

You want the primary idle screw. Don't go messin with the idle mixture just yet. Just turn the screw in until your idle is between 850 and 900.

im having an issue with my weber also but my idle is the other way. It set at about 1100 or so and runs pretty smooth and when I try to bring it down it gets rough. I think mines a timing issue also as im not sure if my timing needs to be altered since i have a mallory dual point and a weber dgv. I would bring your idle up first and than see where to go from there.
