Question on correct gas tank fitting

My Bugeye had neither a gas tank or the gas tank fuel line and fitting. I got a replacement tank that is built to the original specs. The tech folks at Moss said that the pipe shown in the picture would be the correct fuel line fitting to connect to this tank. But as I am staring at it, it is not immediately apparent to me if this is correct. In other words, I do not see how the fuel line fitting works--it does thread into the hole, but I do not see how the ferrule privides a good seal. Does someone more knowledgable than me (which leaves the field pretty wide open) know if this looks correct?

I have no idea if/how it does/would seal but that one looks just like the one in my tank so I would try it.
If you want to you could put some Permatex BEHIND the ferrule and then as you tighten the nut the goop would be forced forward to seal the fitting.

Thanks, Bill. If it looks like what you have in yours, then it must be correct. I'll give it a try.

Jim,
looks like your getting close!!
I haven't seen a bugeye at our 1st Sunday AM breakfast, when yours is running, if not before, come join us

The line from Moss has what is called a compression fitting end, where the nut seals by the little ferrule tightening against the outside of the female fitting and squeezing the line. These fittings are commonly available in hardware stores. You can get the proper mating female there by taking you Moss line to the store. Then compare the inside of that fitting to the one on the tank.

Your tank looks as though it has a flair fitting end. This takes a line with a little bump formed on the end; it's basically a brake line. I have the line off my bugeye, but I won't have access to the car until Monday. I think my line had a flair fitting.

Now, it is very possible that the compression fitting may mate to the flair end in the tank and seal OK. Moss may know what they are doing.

That looks like the original fitting used with my new replacement fuel tank. It mated beautifully with no problems (or additional goop, o-rings or gaskets). Good luck!!

Looked like that to me as well but then I thought maybe just an optical delusion!!

The original lines that I've seen are similar to that ferule, except that in those instances, the ferule was brazed to the line. It should not be necessary to braze it, and should give a little wiggle room. Use what they sent, you'll be fine.

Jim, is the end of the line flared? There should be a double/ inverted flare at the end of the pipe; that's how it seals. You can see the inverted flare seat inside the gas tank fitting.

The part Peter refers to is a soldered on bronze flared end to mate the tank fitting and with a shoulder for the nut pressed against. In this case, the compression fitting does nothing except give the nut something to push against.

I would suggest using some Teflon tape on the threads too.
