brake over ride relay

Can the brake over ride relay switch be serviced? I have a failure on the left side directional lights (front and back). I have checked all the wiring and grounding and bulbs. Serviced and cleaned the trafficator. All that is left is the over ride switch. I hear the solenoid when I turn the trafficator to the right but quiet when turned to the left. Probably the points need attention. Ive never seen anything on the forum regarding this. Can it be done while on the car?

Can the brake over ride relay switch be serviced?

WOT!!- You mean you got one of them things???
Well if you got one yep they can be serviced---Keoke--

I have a Phase 1 so it differs from the standard BJ8, having some older stuff. Its really a nifty contraption if you look at the schematics as to what it does. Kind of Rub Goldberg technology.
Keoke, I will try will it is still mounted on the car. Should be fun position to be in for a while. If all fails, I remember the hand signals we use to use (are they still legal?)

I think your talking about the flasher relay - that rectangular box mounted on the inner fender with 8 wires attached. You can carefully remove the cover to get to the relays. I don't know what you would do other than clean the contacts. I've had them apart in the distant past but now, with all those wires, they scare the "stuff" out of me.

Some books refer to it as a flasher relay, others a brake over ride relay. It shuts off the brake lights when the flasher is on. It doesn't cause the flash. That comes from the silver canister thing on the fire wall and I didn't want to confuse people who don't have the relay.

Well, if it's not clicking, it isn't dirty contacts. The coil is not energizing. THAT can be caused by all sorts of things, from the TS Switch to corroded inline connectors, to a bad connection at the relay. Looking at the 100 drawing, looks like the pair of wires top and bottom could be swapped to make sure the relay on the other side is working.

Hi Tahoe,

Yes, you can service the DB10 relay box by cleaning the 4 contacts. However, I would first check the 8 connectors and ground first to make sure all are clean and tight. Terminals 6-Front Flasher, 7-Rear Flasher, and 8-Relay activated by the directional switch, service the left lights. If the left side flashers are not activating but the right side is, I would double check terminal 8 (relay terminal) to see if power is reaching that point.

Hope this helps,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

Not advised. You need it on the bench to service it properly.

Should be fun position to be in for a while.

Yeah but after the "While" gonna hurt.

Very dangerous nobody else is old enough to remember them.

The Late Jim Albeck uprated one using small Cheap radio shack relays and wrote the design up in an early Chatter type Magazine maybe Reid or a member can recall the issue.

Got her done this afternoon. Easy. Took it off and opened it. Checked the solenoids using the battery and jumper cables. When I found they worked well , I cleaned all the points and removed the dust. Now it works fine.
I jumped across the brake switch and the brake lights worked. Got a replacement from Moss. So, i now have brake and signal lights. What a concept!
So, the two were not related even though they happened at the same time. Go figure.
Thanks for all the help.
