Wow, it has been forever since I've been to this site. So, since the last time I was here, I've gotten divorced, gone back to school, and picked up 2 MGBs for $950, both chrome bumpered to add to my Spitfire.
The 1971 MGB is jaw droppingly amazing. The body is straighter than most restos, only rust is surface on the floorpans inside where there was condensation under the rubber mats, been under cover since 1994. Of course tires, hydraulics, and shocks need to be replaced. However, the big thing I'm on the hunt for is a driver's door latching/lock mechanism. It just doesn't trip to hold the door closed. A new one is $300-400, which is almost what I've got budgeted to get this guy back on the road save for DMV fees.
So, does anyone have a spare mechanism they're willing to part with cheap? I'm now a poor student and the B will be my backup car since my 1978 Spitfire is my only other car. The 2nd MGB is awaiting transport and evaluation. Plus, my friend who has been kind enough to keep my MGB in his garage the last 4 months is getting it as payment...
Any help or ideas to fix the latch is much appreciated. I've already soaked and cleaned it, but can't figure out how to get into the mechanism since it seems to be one piece. Thanks.
Here's a link to my Facebook album with the car:
