After you have checked that all your lug nuts are tight, make sure that the oil cap is back in place before you go on a 100 mile drive. All the time wondering why do I smell oil??

Been there. The best part is when it runs down the underside of the hood to the leading edge then, as you drive, the air passing over the hood pulls it up and over the top of the hood onto the windshield.

What a bummer Dan,I really feel for you. Clean up will be a real pain.

Dan-

Bummer but don't forget oil and TRs go together likes peas and carrots anyway. Just be thankful the oil cap didn't bounce between the positive battery pole and a good ground point - that would have been exciting!

Poor man's rustproofing? Lots of degreaser and elbow grease will get it off. Saw this at a quickie lube once. Lube kid forgot the cap and when the turbo got hot,it burst into flames. Carbecue anyone?

Exceedingly lucky that cap didn't rattle around and find its way between the battery post and flasher!!!

What a bummer Dan. At least there was no damage done. I had a similar thing happen the night before a big car show. The problem with mine was a freeze plug that came out in back of the head while driving at speed. You can guess what the engine compartment looked like.

Dan after you get most of the heavy oil wiped up Meguiar's makes a nice product to get up the film called Detailer Body Solvent. It will not damage the paint but will remove the film.

I don't know what's in the Meguiars, nor how much the stuff costs, but I use VM&P Naptha at the guitar repair shop all the time. Cuts oils, adhesives, waxes, grime, etc. and leaves the paint paint entirely alone -- including fragile lacquers. Dries quickly -- no residue. Cheap! At your local hardware or paint store. Don't let it sit on your rubber too long, however...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I used simple green motorsports cleaner. It seemed to work great. I got all that I could last night and am going under the car this morning. On the brightside it will give me the push to do a complete cleaning for triumpfest!!

Yes. It's a shame, but that shiny brass tag looks great! :yesnod:

Well, at the risk of being obnoxious,

at least the open cap didn't mean there wasn't any oil in it.

I'd rather clean the underside of the hood than replace the bearings.

The underside of my bonnet is the part on the car with the best paint due to a previous owner having done the exact same thing... twice. He didnt bother cleaning up the oil the 2nd time and it made a nice protective coating that i've recently been working at cleaning up =P
