Where the square solenoids used from the factory on the later tr3A&Bs or did those come out on the tr4A.

Yes, barrel style continued on TR4s (moved to the right side of the engine then perhaps moved again due to heat failures there). I believe the square (with no button) unit did arrive somewhere along the run of 4As.

Later TR4s were more square.

As I implied before, I really don't know when the "square" ones were introduced, but my '69 Mk3 and '70 GT6+ both had square ones, and I'm about 99% sure they had buttons for remote operation of the starter.

This is the 'square' version I was thinking of -- incorrectly installed on my TR3A when I got it, had no button:

If nothing else, the wiring harness on that car was at least colorful.

The Vicky Brit catalog shows the one pictured being used on all 4s & 4As, the Moss catalog shows the earlier rubber button version for all 3s, 4s & 4As. So that's not much help.

The pic Geo shows is the style I have on both my TR4s, they are later 1964 CT30000+ cars. Never looked hard enough to see if they were just aftermarket replacements though, but on one car I don't think so.

Barrel type for the TR2/3 and early TR4. Original square ones have a black button (between the studs) that will turn the engine over like the the barrel type. Repos left it off.

Oddly enough, though, it appears that the Stanpart number did not change. My TR250 SPC has only one number for the solenoid itself (121269, same as earlier TRs) but lists two different sets of hardware, one for Model 2ST and one for Model 4ST.

Doesn't surprise me at all, Randall! OTOH, the Lucas part numbers went back and forth over the years on the 2ST model (and not just that suffix letter). It's also worth noting that there were at least two distinctive styles of the 2ST, with earlier ones having more or less cast "feet" and the later ones having a simpler sheet metal mounting bracket. That change occurred around 1959-60!

I'm still skeptical that those square ones didn't show up a little earlier than 68.. like 64 maybe! But I can't prove it yet!

Wouldn't be the first time the documentation didn't match the cars, for sure.
But I did the same thing Andy did (I think), and checked the Lucas catalogs. The 1967 catalog still shows the 2ST (with different part numbers as noted).

Indeed, that is what I did: I looked year-by-year from around 1963-68 and spot-checked some earlier years.

And yes, I would note that a: the change could've come somewhere in 1967 (after the 1967 Lucas catalog was printed), and b: there are often disagreements between factory and supplier catalogs, and I've found errors and typos in both!
