100-4 Front Crankshaft Seal

Hello Members,
I seem to have a lot of oil coming from the front of the engine and purchased a stock-type replacement to install. Before I do that, I am curious if anyone has retrofitted a modern steel-encased rubber seal with any success? If not, has anyone found a way to make these work better?

If you're referring to the old 'rope style' seal BCS offers a modified cover to fit a modern rubber/spring seal (others may too by now).

G'day Dan,
I recently fitted a new felt seal on my engine and there is no leak from there. This is the type of seal that Austin used in the day and perfectly adequate provided there is no wear on the crankshaft pulley and the pulley is centralised in the seal. A lip seal could be more likely to wear into surface of the pulley than a felt seal but it would take a long time to do that.

Thank you for your replies. I forged ahead with an original type seal after removing what was left of the old felt seal. As you can see from the picture, there wasn't much left. The new felt seal from Moss is about twice as wide as the channel in the timing cover. I've got questions! Are these supposed to be trimmed to fit? I've tried wedging it in with no luck. Are they supposed to be saturated with grease or oil to get them wedged in?

I am open to and appreciate any other tips to make this a one-time replacement.

P.S. Alwyn, I am glad I read your post elsewhere about attaching the cover and pully as a unit.
