Wire Knock-offs

I know that this is going to be a vague question but how tight should they be? I just put new tires on the GT6 and the thaught came to me. I had always just hammered the crap out of the wrench but there has to be some kind of "offical" text out there on how to tighten the knock-offs

Thanks

Put a little (notice I said little) grease on the threads first. Hit them enough to snug them pretty good. You do not have to pound the c### out of them because they should tighten on their own. Unless you have the splined hubs on the wrong side of the car in which case they would loosen instead.

If you are banging dents and divots in everything within striking distance you are surely overdoing it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Grease on threads, anti-sieze on splines and just snug them up with some taps.

I like to use a 3lb deadblow hammer hitting a 1x1x10 piece of oak. I keep several of the wood pieces on hand though they last a long time. I try to use many persistant taps rather than trying to get the thing on or off with one or two mighty wangs.

Moss sells a wodden paddle thingy, with a cut-out that goes over the winged knock-off. You can use it for both tightening the knock-offs (gives extra leverage) and loosening them. I use it and a rubber mallet to tap the nut loose.

Hello all,

I'm surprised, Rob, that you can undo a knock off with a rubber mallet!
The normal tool is a copper\hide mallet, the copper to loosen or finally tighten the nut and the hide to do the rest. Don't be too easy on the final tightening, it is a large diameter fastening so needs reasonable force, until it won't go up any more. Yes, they are handed, but that is more so they don't come loose rather than a self tightening feature.

If you use the Moss wooden paddle adapter thingy also, then a rubber mallet will do the job. The adapter gives you extra leverage, and protects the knock-off wings.

My GT6 does not have the little "ears" that my MGB had, the Triumph has the hex sided deal. I have a little steel wrench that I got from VB. I do grease the splines and the threads but I do pound the fool out of the thing. I hit it hard till it stops turning.
