Starting Problems

Good day LBC Fans...

I rebuilt my '66 B engine a few months ago... Runs great.

Recently, however, it is giving me a problem... It won't start when the starter is used. It cranks and cranks but doesn't start.

It starts immediately if I roll it, even slightly, and pop the clutch... Hot or cold....

Any suggestions???

The first thing that pops into my mind is: Double check the wiring on that coil. I'm not an expert on the early B's, BUT, IIRC, some of them change the voltage to the coil when the ignition switch is turned to the start position. If you're not getting the right voltage while the starter is going it's really difficult to get the car started due to the extremely weak spark. Hence, easy starts when you push start it, but no cigar when you use the starter.

You might try measuring the voltage on the 12v side of the coil and while the volt meter is in place have someone crank the engine and see if the voltage stays. If it goes away, I would suspect the ignition switch.

My 63 did that last year. It would turn the engine slowly and would not fire. drove me crazy looking for the problem. I removed the starter to check. Cleaned the starter switch. Checked every wire twice. Bought a new battery.

Finally dumb luck prevailed. One of the battery wires between my 2 6's had a corroded copper wire I had missed when cleaning battery terminals which I assume you have already done.

Grab each wire near the terminal and shake them to make sure the connections are good/solid.

Hi Rob:

What size are the wheels and tires on your white car?
