BJ8 horns, high & low note directions

Greetings,

I had one bad horn (high note)on my BJ8, and so I sent them both (MAW syndrome)off for restoration to British Car Part Restoration in Mass. I've got some crummy replacement horns that will work in the place of the original Lucas horns until I get mine back from restoration. These replacement horns have some custom made brackets--they work, but the "bell" of the horn points out at a 45 degree angle. My question is: is the high note forward (or aft), the low note aft (or forward)? To make this clear, aft is facing towards the firewall, forward facing towards the radiator. With the bracket as is, they could be mounted either way. The horns are an embarrassment, and so I'll keep my bonnet closed until I get the originals back.

Rob

Rob,

Depends .. would you rather hear the horns or have the guy/gal in the SUV with the cell phone stuck to their face hear them? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cheers,
John

High note is forward on mine. When one of my horns died, BSCR sent me a plastic replacement after they sold me a Lucas horn. Complete garbage, and a huge fight over "it's the same thing." Thankfully, my old buddy ebay seems to have a ready supply of real lucas horns at around $25. A quick gloss black spray and a turn of the adjusting screw and they're good to go.

John,

I've a two part response to your question. 1. I would rather have others hear the horn over the city's din than me listening to its wimpy tone, and 2. In what position were the Lucas horns originally mounted?

Hi Rob, For the BJ8 both horns are mounted on the right shroud support and the bells face down. I suppose pointing them down makes the horns less directional.

Toot toot,
John

And the forward one is the high note. Even SHG knew that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif--Keoke

OK, forward horn is the high note, with both of the bells pointing downwards. Are the horns mounted inboard or outboard of the shroud support bracket? I believe outboard is correct, but by mounting the horns inboard, the wiring is concealed. Which way is correct? I've seen several car's horns mounted both ways, and only one can be correct.

Rob

The horns are mounted outboard of the support bracket.
And, yes, the wiring does show. For what it's worth I recently had my original horns re-conditioned by British Car Part Restoration in Mass. I was very pleased with the results.Fast turn around and very clean work.

hmmm .. outboard to me would be the side towards the outside of the car and inboard would be the side towards the center. So the factory mounting scheme is to put them on the inboard side with the wires exposed. I hope I haven't confused anyone! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'll make a feeble attempt at clarity. Outboard = towards the engine; inboard = towards the wings/fenders. I believe the horns were mounted inboard towards the wings/fenders. Does this help? I've received a couple of posts stating inboard, which I believe means "towards the wings/fenders".

Rob

Rob, Let's drop the inboard/outboard since my definition (and the dictionary's) is different than yours. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

From what I've seen in BJ8 photos such as the Anderson/Moment book, the horns are mounted on the engine side. I've also seen people turn them around to hide the wiring or make more room for alternators.

Cheers,
John

it happens every once in a while. And the horns are mounted on the engine side. Bells down, wires showing. I could keep going, but I think I've firmly established that I know my horns. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

John,

Whoops, so much for clarity. You're right on inboard/outboard--I got them reversed. A senior moment. I now know the horn's positioning. Thanks to all--case closed.
