While I was waiting to figure out how to pull the rear hubs decided to tackle adding the leather straps in the spare tire compartment. I found this part at the back centre of the compartment. Anyone tell me what it is for? I was thinking it might hold a rubber fitting of some sort to cushion the spare tire, but I can't find a reference to it in my parts book (although I may well have missed it).

In a related question, does the strap to "hold" spare, just stop it from coming "out"? For some reason, I thought it wrapped around the tire, buy I don't think it is long enough for that.

My car has the same thing, left it as is. I believe the strap is to keep the tire from flying out the back when drag racing, NHRA rules.

Yeah, I think they all had that dingus. I thought it was just a stop for the tire as you push it in - but it seems overly complex for such a simple task.

I'm going to check and see if my 60 has it tomorrow. I don't remember seeing it in mine. Guess it could have been removed though at some point....

They're all similarly afflicted. P. 88 ST parts book, plate #AH23, part #700938, Bracket, spare wheel stop. Helps decelerate the spare at the end of the 1/4 mile. Possibly designed by the son of John Black.

Thanks for the input. Tom is right on. Seems like it is just a stop, but it sure looks overly complicated and seems like it should have a rubber pad in the centre, although none is shown in the parts book. Cheers, Mike
