Does anyone know what car this is from based off this serial number? I'm guessing it's from a TR4 or TR6 as it has the bent shifter but wasn't sure.

thanks!

That's a casting number. The serial number, if present, will be stamped into one of the bosses where the clutch shaft goes through.

Ah, thanks for that information! I'll get back with real serial number soon then.

So it's from a TR4... thanks Randall and Andy.

One more question while I'm at it... someone recently told me that I can swap out the shift lever with one from a TR3, can someone verify that? I've put up a want ad for a shift lever already in the wanted section.
thanks again

It can definitely be done. However you may need to modify the top cover slightly by drilling the threads to clear the bolt that goes through the shift lever. I don't recall the change points offhand, but the later levers using locating pins instead of the through bolt.

Note that there will also be some other issues if you are putting it in your 56 TR3. The 4-synchro box is about 3/8" longer than the 3-synchro, which means the rear mount needs to move back. And most likely your gearbox tunnel won't clear the starter bulge on the gearbox unless you massage it a bit or use a tunnel from a later TR3A.

Another route if you are interested is to rebuild a TR3 top cover using the shift rails & forks from the TR4 cover. That way you get to keep the dipstick, which I find kind of handy.

Thanks Randall, the TR4 gearbox with overdrive came already installed in my car and everything fits fine so I guess a previous owner took care of any adjustments.
