I'm replacing all the rubber for the front and rear drivetrain mountings - up in the engine compartment with the 2 rectangular blocks all seems fine, but down below at the transmission crossmember/cradle there are things that make no sense. I ordered a complete drivetrain mount refurb kit that contains all new rubber bits and new fasteners, but I have some things left over and pictures in the books make less sense than usual.
The illustrations all seem to show a metal rod coming forward from the transmission cradle to a bracket on the bottom 2 bellhousing bolts, and my refurb kit has the rubber blocks that would go on the end of this rod, if it actually existed. What the illustrations DON'T show is an assembly that consists of of a squareish brackets that attaches to the crossmember and has a round rubber bushing in it. There is a matching peice that goes under the rubber blocks that attach to the transmission (also with a round rubber bushing) and a bolt with big washer/flanges that holds the 2 parts together. I did receive the rubber bushing for this in the refurb parts, but its actual function escapes me, and it doesn't seem to exist in the drawing.
So I have this mystery component that goes between the top and bottom of the transmission cradle which doesn't seem like it serves any purpose since its bolted to rigid components (which are all part of the same assembly), and I don't have this extra rod that goes between the cradle and the bellhousing. Even more importantly, the holes in the cradle that the missing rod would pass through are also nonexistant, so it doesn't look like it was simply removed by some previous person.
All of this came out of a fully assembled 1970 MGB and it was completely installed/mounted into that car with no apparent modifications to anything. Do I just have a non-matching year crossmember, and is the a compellling reason (ie: safety or serious alignment concern) to NOT use the components I have and attempt to source the ones that look like the pictures?
