Hiya,

How do I change my gearbox oil? Will the oil drain Ok if my car is on some ramps? I think I can spot two big drain plugs on my gear box is this correct?

Thankyou!!

Arnaud.

I've never changed the gearbox oil before, but I know that the gearbox has two plugs. The lower one is the drain... Obviously... and the upper one is the one you fill. Others on this site have discussed how much oil to put in. I believe the consensus is that you fill the gearbox until the level is even with the fill plug. Anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

you're correct Andre

....just be sure the car is level when you fill it to the level of the upper plug (it's on the side of the trans.....you'll need some sort of flex-pipe and funnel to fill it....an even then, it can be messy)

Hi all!

What sort of MG is it? if it is a MGB or MGC the bung is on the gearbox tunnel inside the cockpit just in front of the centre console.

On my cars (1970 MGB and 1968 MGC) there is a flap of carpet that flips out of the way revealing a removable rubber bung. Under this is a short dipstick with a circular ring pull on top of it. This fits quite securely down into a recess in the top of the gearbox housing as it has a couple of rubber o rings on it.

To fill or top up the gearbox I normally use a transmission/oil syringe with a length of clear plastic hose(same sort of gadget you use for topping up the diff oil level), getting oil on the carpets is not a good plan!!!

Remember do not use transmission oil in the gearbox and if you have overdrive non friction modified oils are probably a good plan as well.

hope ths helps

regards

Tom

Assuming the Midget gearbox filler/oil level plug is similar to later MGB's, I use a ÂŁ9.34 oil suction gun (500 ml) bought from Machine Mart. It is a very clean and efficient way of filling the gearbox and rear axle. If you fill the gearbox with the front of the car jacked up (nose up) it will be overfilled. Make sure the car is level. I use two axle stands at the front and ramps under the rear wheels.

I bought a "pump" from Auto-Zone (Hi-low/ O'Reilly & Pep-Boys also ) It's a manual pump that fits onto the gallon container of oil. The "suggested" oil for a Midget tranny is 80wt Hypoid Gear Oil if you're refilling. That's suggested. I use 90 weight since I live in a very hot climate and...just 'cause I want to.
The pump cost me under 10dollars and has a 2ft hose for filling.

PS... I forgot... the rear end requires 90 weight also; I keep it in both. That is what I do...Haynes and Bentley say 80 wt.in tranny/ 90wt in rear.
