A few weeks ago I picked up a cheap ribcase that had been in a flooded basement. I had to strip in down completely to check for damage. I’d never removed a 3rd gear before but getting it apart wasn’t a problem. Well last night I went to put it back together and couldn’t figure out how to do it. There is a spring loaded plunger that locks into a splined washer / collar. You need to push in the plunger, slide down the washer and rotate it half a tooth to get the plunger to pop out and lock the washer in place. Sounds easy right, well the syncro cone on 3rd didn’t allow me to keep the plunger pushed in (even with a jewelers screw driver) and still get the washer down. I fought with it for a half hour or so and then my girlfriend came down stairs. She looked at it and said " why don’t I push in the plunger and you make a loop with some small gauge wire, pull on the loop to hold in the plunger, then I'll push the collar down to catch the plunger, then you pull out the wire" Work like a charm. God I love her.
So what have others done when reassembling 3rd?
