Rebuild a PCV Valve

The PCV valve on my '66 II-A failed such that my Rover resembled a crop duster in flight. Oil filled the exhaust system so much that there was raw oil at the tailpipe.

The new PCV valve is over $150, which is awfully expensive. The car runs fine with the valve disconnected, but I have ordered the diaphragm for $13.00. How do I disassemble the unit without breaking it? Does the diaphragm simply sit in the unit? Has anyone rebuilt one before?

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff: Isnt there a clip on the top? Just pry it off. Remove the cover and replace the diaphram.

Andy,

That's exactly what I did. When I pulled the wire clip off and popped the top, I found the existing diaphragm had become two concentric diaphragms instead of one. No wonder it pulled oil through!

The whole operation took 5 minutes and the car runs much cleaner. I still have some oil usage due to blowby on the 12-year old engine, but I can live with that for a while. So far, there's no base pressure popping through the oil fill tube or the dipstick tube.

Great! I looked in an old (1994) RN catalog to jog my memory. That PCV is the good old Smiths "Mushroom" found on many LBCs of that era. I beleive the one used on the Series LR is the same as was used on the 65-68 MGB, and is available from Moss and others for under $30. Worth investigating.
But as you know they are pretty easy to rebuild.
Love the pics of your rig on the other thread.

Thanks, Andy. You're right on the PCV. I recognized it, too, as a mid-60's BMC/TR/BL "solution." It's right up there with the thermostatic water chokes on the Spitfires!

East Coast Rover created quite a story on their website. BTW. how do you like your Discovery Series II? I rode in one at the Maine Winter Romp, one lifted and outfitted for more challenging off road use, and I was very impressed. The utterly stock Series II that I drove a few years ago on Maine highways was extraordinary to me.

Jeff: I like it a lot. I got a good deal when it came off lease in November, still on factory warranty. If you believe everything posted on some of the Disco boards the truck is a time bomb. BTDT, so I not too worried.
I drove a 70 Series IIA as a daily driver for 2 years, then an 83 grey market Rangie (with the LT95 4 speed) for five years. Rebuilt them both in the process. The Range Rover was a fantastic off roader.
I havent had the chance to test out my latest. But I am enjoying the heated seats and winter package here on the North Coast of Lake Erie! We've had almost 150 inches of snow accumulation this year (and it aint over).

See my second post above. Moss Motors has the MG equivalent, Rovers North has it for about twice the price in a LR box.
