Power Steering refurbishment

Hey Guys,

My power steering on the TR8 is, well, totally shot. I'm ordering all the necessary bits from The Wedge Shop, but I've got one last piece and I'm not sure how many I need. I think 2, but I'd rather ask and be corrected than order the wrong number.

If you don't get an answer here the TR8 mailing list will have the answer. That list has some overlap with the folks here, good people despite my being on it, and we can make sure what you/we/all of us learn is shared here as well.

Thanks for the reply. I just said the heck with it and ordered 4. Any extras will just go into the parts stash for use at a later point in time.

My rack started leaking like crazy just before it went into storage, so I had another put on while it was there. Make sure you use ATF when you put it back together again.

Hey guys,

I finally got all the bits for the power steering. Rebuilt rack & pump, new lines, the lot. I just have to finish remodeling a bathroom (home improvement with children in the house is a very slow process. Eesh) Get my garage de-catostrophized, and i can put it in.

I've been reading the manuals, and despite it being an annoying job, it doesn't look too bad. Any tips/tricks i should be aware of now, before i start tearing into things?

Also, i gave up on the passing emissions route. The wife let me buy a truck (soi could remodel the bathroom, it was a double edged sword) so i can now go the historic route. So, with a new power steering set-up and a little brake fiddling i should be properly on the road with this thing!

Replacing the rack isn't too bad. It's getting at the pump that is no fun. Did you get new tie rod ends, and rack boots?

My TR8 came with manual steering, and your comment about electric PS catches my attention.

Do you have any web links that describes the unit(s) and how it functions?

The pump getting the steering column installed so the wheel was straight was my hardest part.

The large nut on top of the rack controls the pressure yo feel in the wheel when you turn it. Can you take a picture of where yours is set? The folks that did mine left it a touch to heavy for my tastes and I need to adjust it. Just curious if yours in set the same as mine or not.

Hey all,

I'm about halfway through the R&R of my power steering system. Just got the power steering pump up onto the bench. I don't have the Churchill tool 18G 1326, and it appears like most of mynormal pulley removers won't work.

Any tips/ideas on how to get the bugger loose?
