Help please re: Cam recommendations and questions

Which camshaft brand can you recommend?

Piper

APT ($217 for a regrind)

Crane ($212 from Summit not a bad deal)

What are the benefits of a new blank vs a regrind?

I like to wind out my engines, but haven't been able to do so with my MG since the engine has always been so crappy...and really loud.

I'm thinking the VP11...

Thanks in advance for your insights.

I'd recommend calling Dave at APT Fast for information on his cams. He knows his stuff. I have an engine there right now in fact.

I have a Crane in my GT although I'm not sure what model. It's close to a stock grind but a bit more "peppy". The idle is fine and power is good on an otherwise mostly stock engine.

Piper 275 is a common and proven cam for fast street use. It's been around for ages so you know what you're getting when you buy one. 285 is more aggressive but won't idle nicely like the 275.

I've a decades old Crane .413 lift here and a Weber 40 DCOE for a coal shovel. Couldn't be happier.

I would go with all the items mentioned.
APT has all these in stock, and you can't go wrong. Ideally the springs should be mated to the cam, and new lifters are always used.

I've used the VP11 and VP12 in my customer engines, like them both, like the VP12 better. When it comes down to a APT regrind or a billet camshaft, either is OK from APT, as both are hardened, it will come down to what David has in stock, he's had a hard time getting regrindable MGB cam cores, I haven't been able to get a MGB regrond camshaft form APT in a year or so, so it's a availablity issue, either properly hardened (which they do) will work. You also need to spring for their CF-04 lifters, matching cam and lifter hardness is very important, don't kid yourself into thinking a regular set of lifters is OK, it's not. As for the valve springs, stock valve springs will work fine with either of these cams, if they are up to snuff, they need to checked on Rimac or similar valve spring checker.
Hope this helps.

Had to look it up (same cam I was going to use until I lost my footing on that 'slippery slope' to financial ruin /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif
