10. Place milk crate into car, since you have already removed the seats
11. Wedge knees under steering wheel, hold top of wheel with one hand, hold 2 pound sledge with other hand over the nut.
12. Re evaluate your marital relationship
13. Have wife hit the sledge with the hammer 110 times.

And that folks is the correct way.

Really, the hammer routine is just to vibrate the friction holding the wheel on the spline loose. You're not going for a manly, ding the bell at the carnival result. My wife can barely squash a bug with a hammer, the force she used wouldn't drive a nail through hardwood. The hits/vibration did result in the wheel suddenly coming off, thus one of the needs for the nut on the column. Interestingly there is no sign of rust on the spline, which I assumed would be the reason I had so much trouble and no damage to the splines. I was so pumped that we got the wheel off, I just had to write this post. No damage occured, although my wife almost missed with the hammer on a few occasions. BTW, this midget does not have a collapsible steering column, but even if yours does, you really wouldn't be hitting the column hard enough to do any damage if you follow these hack instructions.

Yeah, I had to figure out #10 after #6. I gave up on #12. The steering wheel is still on the car. So I'm stuck back at #5.
