I'm considering pulling the trigger on a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. The upsides are it has the 4.0 Liter six with a 5 speed. The original owner had it for 23 years, passed to another owner who bought it last May. It's never been modified or taken off road and appears to have been garage kept. The price is very modest as well.
The downside is that it has 255,000 miles on it. However, when I took it for a test drive, it drives extraordinarily well. Clutch, tranny, brakes, steering all felt good. Tires still have plenty of tread. I've heard the 4.0s can run forever, but 255k seems to be pushing it a bit. I know the seller, which is a plus, so I know he's not hiding anything.
Are there any good aftermarket places for Jeep parts like we have with Moss, BPNW, et al? There are a couple of pieces I will need to replace, like the plastic windows on the soft top which have all become translucent, if not opaque.
The reason for the Jeep is for us to have something with a removable top that we can enjoy as a family. Unfortunately, Baby Blue only has 2 seats for the three of us. I'm also leery of driving the little Sprite over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It's about 95 miles door to door to my daughter's group home. I think the Jeep would be perfect for our trips to visit her and give her some of that "top down" feeling that she loves so much.
To make room for the Jeep, I'm moving the '53 Plymouth project to my new workshop space in Frederick. I got a good deal on a large garage space right in the heart of downtown Frederick. The main project at the workshop is a '45 Ercoupe 415-C that we hope to restore to airworthy status, but the Plymouth will be worked on concurrently...hopefully, I'll finally get it running after almost 7 years.
