I have a late Spitfire single rail o/d gearbox that I'm preparing to use in my wife's Herald. The ball bearings and springs from the 3rd/4th gear sychro hub were missing from the hub and laying in the bottom of the gear case. I was able to re-install them by removing the interlock plate and over-extending the outer hub into the 4th gear position. After re-installing the interlock plate, the hub retains the ball bearings and springs without problem. There doesn't appear to be any adjustments in the linkages as everything is in fixed positions.
How did the ball bearings escape the synchro hub? I don't know the history of this gearbox so I suppose it is possible they escaped by someone messing around with the gearbox with the interlock plate removed and unknowingly released them.
