Transmission rebuild?

I have the top plate off of my 1500 tran, and everything looks pretty good. The reverse gear is showing some wear, but everything else looks pretty tight to my untrained eye. Are there any tell-tale signs of wear I should be looking for?

My gears typically grind when going from 1st to 2nd under hard accelleration. I thought it might be the synchro rings, but they appeart to be fine. Is there something else that could be causing this problem? How can I tell if the rings are worn?

Finally, my throw out bearing is solid, but all the grease has turned hard and brittle. Would it be stupid to attempt to clean the bearing and repack it?

Thanks guys.

The actual part of the "baulk ring" that does the work is INSIDE it. Can't see it without pullin' it apart. As for the T/O bearing, REPLACE it! You'll be doin' the whole job again SOON if you don't.

2P as offering.... Judges?

Bearings, synchros, seals, and possibly a layshaft are de rigueur for a tranny rebuild. If you don't do it now, all you are doing is practicing for the next time you do it. Soon.
And yes, change the throwout bearing.
Jeff

This is a diff'rent box than the B, but I look at it the same way as Jeff. If you don't do the lot now, you WILL do it again, soon. Layshaft & bearings, input and output bearings, synchro's... and any other "thingies" wot appear worn. The manuals give you end-play tol's, clearances and all to measure, but I'd say use those to determine the efficacy of your REBUILD, as the thing is a sumbitch to yank twice in six months or less.

I'd be willing to BET (not a common occurance) your layshaft will be "cut" at the bearing points and need replacing... a complete teardown is the only real way to tell for sure.

Well Doc I am very sorry to say that you lost that bet. Really sorry. The layshaft (which is pristine) is purty cheap compared to the second gear, overrider gear and reverse idler (which are chewed up!) Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo!

ACK! I'd rather have won... sorry t'hear all that. First is good tho?

First looked pretty good at a glance. The synchro teeth (Maybe that's what they are called?) are what's chewed up on 2nd. But the brass synchro rings look un-molested. Weird, huh?

Remember we said the INSIDE of the synchro is what does the work. It should NOT slip by hand on the "receiver" cone it sets against. If you can turn it while putting pressure "down" (toward the cone) on it, it's shot. The "teeth" being shot is a sign the associated ring is too. Err on the side of caution as doing that job twice is NO fun.

I have a back up tran waiting for me in Jolly Roger's parts vortex, so I am hopeful I don't have to do a rebuild right now. I just need something to hold me over whilst I create a frankenstien 5-speed set up. Mhwah hah hah hah!
