my machinest has started the disassembly and so far he has determined that someone has been in the engine, the crankshaft main bearing journals and rod journals have been turn down 010, but he said that was ok since the crank will get nitrided, he said the head was very difficult to remove since one of the studs was rusted really bad, thats the update so far

Not surprising on the crank either. That may have been done at the factory. It was not unusual to see new cars with cranks cut.
 
well got a call tonight from my rebuilder, he pulled all the rods and pistons out, he seems to think someone tried to rebuild the engine in the past from the bottom up, new STD piston, and rings, but done thru the bottom end, head was never taken off, original valves, springs etc, he also found that the rods were put back in non original order. glad I have carillo rods and new JE pistons going back in. Keep you posted

I didn't think it was possible to remove a TR6 piston from the bottom..much less getting one back with piston rings installed..
 
well they must have dropped the crank, and reinstalled the pistons and rings and put the crank back in explains why the head was never removed, again when approached with a challenge there is a way around it

I wasn't talking about the crank being in the way. I thought the cylinder was taperd, smaller at the bottom.
 
It is possible, not easy, but possible with the crank out. Perhaps the guy gave up on removing the head, and said "Hey, this will work"
 
There is also no carbon ridge to fight at the bottom, so if the taper is slight and the rings are not frozen or filled with carbon in the grooves, they can collapse enough to get them out.

But as Ray and Ken more or less stated, it ain't gonna be easy. Plus, who wants to install a crank from the bottom up???
 
If the PO rebuilt the engine by putting the piston in from the bottom and the engine ran, he has my respect. That's doing it the hard way even if the engine was out of the car.

well the more I work on my TR6. nothing surprises me any more the only thing left to do is the front wiring harness and I know thats a mess, cut wires everywhere, no hazard lights either

I did not see any reason stated why the re-builder suspected the bottom up rebuild. If it is solely due to the difficulty of the head removal, he just ran by a regular TR6. I still have the stock valves and springs in my head and the head has been redone twice. (total about 85k miles). The valve guides needed attention but not the valves nor the springs. I think the machinist just may have run up on a TR6 "stuck" head.
