STP versus Purolator oil filters

I recently bought a STP oil filter (no. S2995). Today I was in the store where they had a sale on Purolator filters. After coming home, I compared the two and noticed that the Purlator (no. L30381) was taller by about a half inch. The filter and gasket diameter are the same.

Won't you have less filter surface area if the filter is shorter?

Yes BCF, that is generally true . However, 1/2" difference isn't that significant. ---Fwiw--Keoke

Provided the filter media inside the can is larger on the longer filter, yes. No guarantee that it is, though. The shorter filter could have more pleats in it. The only way to know for sure is to cut both of them apart and check.

Based on a study of Oil filters I read a while back, in which filters of all brands were opened and compared, the Purolator is the better filter. STP came down the list in the test with a pretty bad rating.

I recently learned that K & N is now offering Oil Filters.

If they are as good as their Air Filters, (I use a K & N Air filter in my '84 XJ-6 and the horsepower difference was very obvious and inmediate), I plan on using K & N oil filters. The thing is that K & N can be trusted when it comes to quality and the claims they make, unlike the mass-merchandisers who want to sell a million-filters-a-week, if you know what I mean.

K&N has had oil filters for quite awhile.
I just use the NAPA Gold filters. Made by Wix. I'd probably use K&N's if they were readily available, but now all my vehicles have the Wix filters on them.
