I used Nason Ful-Poxy for the primer. It was recommended as being a good choice for protection of projects when there may be lag time before topcoats. I really didn’t think I was going to be able to my time worked out to move directly with the topcoat. I have seen you could go up to seven days with this primer before top coating without scuffing. Also you do need to allow the epoxy primer to cure longer than other primers so you don’t trap ?chemicals inside affecting the topcoat. I let it sit about 17-18 hours with the heaters in the garage putting it in the mid-eighties. I had considered going with Nason single stage urethane after seeing a nice looking paint job posted a couple of months ago. After talking with suppliers for two different paint brands decided to go with base/clear. They both said it was more forgiving to mistakes. You can sand down to base and just rebuild up. On those areas that will be actual exterior in the assembled version will get sanded down I will apply again to the whole exterior. I really wasn’t planning on painting the front yesterday, but could not resist seeing how it would look.
The color is a stock Nason color, Dark Red Pearl. Picked it for its higher flash. Formula has two different pearls, a metallic and aluminum in it. They can blend custom, including stock TR colors.
I did paint in my garage and really did not have a problem with overspray. Using a Vaper HVLP gun. (Saw the same three gun set at Eastwood in the last month just over a $100 for the three guns). I left the door open for better ventilation until it started cooling off in the evening and early yesterday afternoon when the wind was up and blowing dust in off the drive. I did cover the floor with a tarp then with 2-mil plastic sheet. It was getting pretty sticky with the base and clear, did not with the epoxy primer. I wore disposable painting overalls and knit headpiece along with a 3M mask. Since it was warm, I found the overalls hot and I was dripping on the car. Stuffed paper shop cloths at the elastic cuffs on the suit to absorb the moisture.
