watching bugeyes on YouTube I realized how much I enjoyed the sounds of British motors. since I was planning on installation of an a15 datsun drivetrain I have in my bugeye. well is the sound comparable?
The a15 has 8 ports. It sounds like a Datsun engine. Most special cars have their own special sound. The A-series, VW beetle, Jag V12 for examples all are special in their own way. I don't think you will reproduce the British sound with the Datsun engine.
It also depends on what you do with it on the muffler end.
Whether you put on a tube style exhaust manifold or stay stock.
What size pipe you use.
On my A15 I had a Monza style quad muffler which had a throaty sound, I recently switched to a 24 inch Screamin' Eagle Harley muffler with baffles intact.
This has a much lower grumbly sound, and if you punch out the baffle the sound changes again.
If you use a shorty Harley muffler the pitch changes significantly.
I have heard plenty of stock Datsun 1500's and none of them sound like the one in my car. I suspect the SU carbs also effect the output sound, at least I noticed a difference in sound when I switched from the Hitachi downdraft to the twin SU's.
My car doesn't sound exactly like any other car really, it's unique - people know it's me coming from a ways off.
So changing things up a bit can produce a sound tuned to your likes, but I think it would be difficult to get to sound just like a stock spridget.
Maybe it would be a little more spridgety if you used a small pipe leading to a very constrictive muffler, but that would effect performance badly.
I think a lot would have to do with the valve timing. Cams are usually profiled from many many tests on a test engine. Therefore what profile works well on one engine doesn't work well on another. Thus the unique sounds.
It's funny the times it really gets loud and the times it seems quieter are very different compared to my old quad monza setup.
For instance there's a hill leading out of the valley here up to the freeway, when I hit that hill in 4th gear at about 35mph the thing just gets growley.
