Captive nuts?? quick question

Hi Guys

On the TR3A, each front edge of the bonnet has a rubber bumper. I just bought two new from TRF. I see these are installed with nuts above and below the fender well/fender, where they are attached. So, is there no captive nut in this location? I would think that there wouldn't be, as that would interfere with the upper and lower nuts locking down on eachother. Sorry, simple question but I need to know.

Thanks

Pat

Hi Pat

I have not done this yet, but my assumption was that the bumpers screwed into the captive nut and that the two nuts supplied with the bumper are used to lock the bumper at the correct high. Adjust with the bottom one and when set at correct height, tighten the top nut onto the bottom one to lock in place. I'm sure someone else will be able to confirm if this is correct procedure.

Cheers, Mike

Mike is right, so far as I can tell from both a '56 and a '60 parts car. The cage nut is below (like the fender bolt cage nuts behind that spot), and the one bumper (that just broke off in my hand, which is why these are parts cars!) has the remains of the square nut from the cage as well as two hex nuts on it.

:iagree:
Also a flat washer between the upper nut & the fender, just like the other bolts.

I also agree - My 1958 TR3A came new - with captive boxes and square nuts for those bumpers. Same as all the rest of the fender attachment points.

Very timly question as I have just ordered new rubber bumpers (buffers) for my TR3A.
Thanks guys for the info.
I am not sure why you need 2 nuts above the fender as 1 nut above the fender plus the caged nut should lock things up.

The second nut (when used) goes at the top, to clamp the metal piece that carries the rubber insert. It is supplied as part of the buffer assembly.
