Aluminium everything - weight saving?

Hi,

Does anyone know the weight saving of aluminium wings, bonnet and boot lid over their steel equivalents before I go and speak with the dealers who will no doubt be economical with the actualité?

This may not be the answer you are looking for but according to an online look-up table, aluminum = 0.0975 pounds per cubic inch, steel = 0.283, which means aluminum parts should weigh about 1/3 as much as the steel equivalent (assuming same gauge material).

That's actually a pretty good answer. Good job!

But you can never assume the same gauge material is used. It rarely is.

Due to the differences in strength, rigidity and fatigue resistance between steel and aluminum they're almost always used in different thicknesses/geometries.
