So what is the Triumph Forum Run-In for new engine

Saw the cam discussion, have a rebuilt engine installed.
Have run it until the engine has come up to operating temperature at 2000 rpm. Shut down and then re torqued the head bolts.
I will now re-install the rocker and set the valves and I am ready to run again.
How long should I run it at 2200 rpm another 15-20 minutes.
Can I just drive it and or do you have to do this run in as a stand still?

Very difficult to drive it while holding a constant rpm. Kas warned against even blipping the throttle, let alone running up to shift.

But it probably took you most of 15 minutes to get to temp the first time, so I'd guess another 10 min or so would do (to be on the safe side). YMMV

Just curious. Did you allow the engine to cool first, or did you retorque while it was hot?

While hot, my local guru says this is the best way to keep head gasket problems from happening. PIA, but we will see.

I saw and heard all the advice about run-in too. I spent some time with my engine builder discussing the subject. He told me to run the engine at the 2,000rpm range for periods of 5 to 10 minutes watching the temp gage so it did not get hot. He told me that just sitting and running at that rpm for 20 minutes or more would likely over heat the engine. He said that I should run the shorter time periods until I reached a total of about 25 minutes.

I did as he said, the temp rose as he said, and I repeated the shorter runs as he said. It worked for me. I did notice that it was a very unnatural act to just sit there while the engine was turning 2,000 rpm for that long.

He also told me to drop the break-in oil after 100 miles and then change again after another 500 miles. To drive moderately until after the second oil change then drive how I planned on using it. John's business is strictly engine building and is a highly sought after builder of race engines, I followed his advice, besides that, he gave me a guarantee.

Well I reinstalled the rockers and set the valves and I ran it another 10 minutes so far. It does seem odd sitting there.
The temp did rise to and indicated 180 deg. I had the radiator and heater core's rodded and it has puller electric cooling fan. It had switched on and the temp stayed or just dropped a little. It never went over that. I let it go to idle for about 3 minutes and the temp started dropping. This is the 2nd time I have run it this way. First time for the idle period.

When you say drop the break in oil at after 100 miles, did you go to 20W50 then or another round of break in 10W30?

I started running with 10-30 and went to 15-40. My pressure is plenty high and I feel 20-50 would be to much for my engine.

I ran a bottle of EOS in the break-in oil and a couple of oz in the first change. Other than that I did call and verify the zinc content in the oil I run. If that is a concern I feel that because of the rapidly changing oil specs that it should be verified personally.

I was told by a coupe of sources 20 minutes at 2000 rpm to get the cam properly lubed/broken in.

I was worried about overheating I did it with the hood off, 90% or so water in the radiator (water cools better than coolant) and a big external fan on high to simulate air movement.

Temp stayed fairly low, even on a hot day.

For cam break in, Crane Cams says ..."The engine should quickly start and be run between 1500 to 3000 rpm. Vary the rpm up and down in this rpm range during the first 15 to 20 minutes, <u>(do not run the engine at a steady rpm)</u>." /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

The Crane Cams break in is not specific for Triumphs, but it is specific for new Crane Cams.

I'm curious why you feel that way Tom? I was planning on going with the 20w50 Castrol as always.

Years ago, on most overhauls, we broke in cams as above, but after draining/changing the engine oil and filter, we "seated" the rings but driving 20-30 miles at all speeds (but never over 60mph or 3,500 RPM). The rule for ring seating was to never run for a long period at the same rpm. Take it gradually up and down the rpm ranges between idle and 3-3,500 rpm for the first 500 miles. After that, another oil and filter change it drive it normally. Different procedure than the cams.
