I pulled the drivetrain ( 1275 w/ Datsun) to paint the motor ( the one thing I skipped when I restored the BE 8 years ago), to replace the water pump, and rebuild the tranny. This is what I found. No wonder the starter would often not engage. I bought a new ring gear and starter pinion from Moss and noticed on the pinion box that it said " 10 teeth". I counted the ones on the old pinion and there were 9. The starter came from VB, I recall, and I don't understand why it was wrong. The teeth count on the new ring gear matched the old one ( also from VB I think). Replacing the pinion on the starter is a bit of a chore but doable.
