TR2/3/3A Rear Brakes

When installing the rear cylinders and pads, if was obvious something was wrong.The pads didn't fit and the cylinders had no way to bleed the cylinder. Checked the Moss invoice and they sent me parts for the Girling system. With that sorted out I ordered the Lockeed cylinders and pads. I also had to purchase the needed Banjo fitting along with the fasteners that held the brake line on.
Today I attempted to install the new Lockeed cylinders, no way were they going to fit. It appears I have Girling back plates on my 54 TR-2? Now what? I have sent the Girling parts back to Moss but, when they were installed the cylinder did not have the banjo fitting allowing bleeding of the system!

To make my parts work I guess i will have to find two Lockeed back plates?

Either will work...first you have to decide if you want originality or don't care. If you use the girling parts on the girling backplate, the girling cylinders will have a bleeder. It sounds like you will need new back plates if you want to use the lockheed brakes that were original to the TR2. If you send pics I can verify what you are dealing with...but!

Be aware that the girling back plates have 6 mounting bolts on the axle flange, and the Lockheed only has 4, so you will have to switch diffs too, if you have the later back plates like you think. Along with the early diffs, the early axles had a reputation for being weaker and leaking. Marv Gruber will likely have an original TR2 lockheed diff...in fact, I think I do to, but not sure how to ship it to Florida.

Again, rather than swapping parts, post a pic and we can get you on the right track...

I discovered that I have a Girling rear end in my 54 TR-2. I have ordered the correct cylinders and pads now.

I seem to remember the early axles had a tendency to brake half shafts. I wrung the end off mt TR2 back in the 1960s.

Yep, the Girling axle is better all around. Stronger half shafts, better outer bearings, better seals, better hub design, and simpler brake piping. The only reason to keep the original is to, well, keep the car as original, if that’s your restoration goal. If a great driver is your goal, go with the Girling.

I kept the Lockheed on my TR2, but I have an extra diff and spare half shafts just in case.
 
Sure lots of spare parts for a reaR END BUT LET SOMEBODY OFFER HEATER PARTS AND YOU CLAM UP ......lol

I feel I’m being picked on!?! LOL. Honestly, I wish I could ditch the extra axle. I only have it because it came with the special wire hubs I bought from Marv.
