Exhaust bracket help.

Went out for a little cruise and while cruising along I heard a "ker-plink" but did not think much about it. When I pulled away from the next light I heard a bit of scraping. I decided to pull over and found that the exhaust bracket the DPO had let go. Here is what I have. Tell me what I should/can do.

It actually should have a rubber-and-fabric strap there between the lug on the silencer and the brace on the body. You can go to NAPA and get some "raw" strapping and fab up yer own. Using "fender washers" against the strapping material spreads the stress and then they last longer, BTW.

Get a lighter exhaust! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

A generic mount will do the trick. Use a urethane or rubber pad to lessen noise and vibration.

I was contemplating the lighter exhaust idea but don't know what I should go with. I did notice that one I took the pipe off, even though the exhaust was louder, the car was quieter. The way it was run made the car vibrate. That metal bracket did not have and dampening effect at all.

Interesting fact-oid:

As regards socks, long ago it was noticed that socks disappear and wire coat hangers accumulate. Finally someone figured out why: socks are the larval form of wire coat hangers.

LOL @ David!!!

I recommend Peco exhaust systems for the best sound and performance. However they are not cheap and they are not light. The weight is certainly less than the Monza system but heavier than the usual flimsy systems sold for our cars.

I did a series of tests on Peco versus Falcon SS a while back. Under load, the Peco measures louder in the cockpit by a few db than the Falcon does, but the loudness is all bass so it actually sounds quieter. Outside the car they were pretty comparable in loudness.

Finally got a chance to fix my exhaust. It is a piece of 1/4" Stainless steel. Overkill but I had a small scrap that I plotted out on the waterjet. The rubber bracket is from my midget and I just bent it down.

What I'd like to know is: how th' heck did you get that angle for the photo?!?! With the exhaust system up in place I can barely get my hand in there!!!

Just zoomed in a bit and took it between the muff & spring. The other reason I use the waterjet is accuracy. Sure I could have cut out a square & drilled some holes but I might have been off a little and have misalignment. I just draw it and cut it. Countersunk the holes on the drill press. The bottom 2 holes are countersunk from the back and the bolts are welded and ground smooth. (they don't turn that way when I tighten the nuts.) It was actually a fairly smooth install. I just need to tighten the clamp at the midpoint of the car.
