I’m not finding a torque spec in my manual. I know it’s supposed to be 100 foot pounds or something like that, but where is that stated? Also, just wondering—would 90 be enough?
 
100ish sounds about right. There is some leeway as on the TR3 you have to end up around the 10:00 - 4:00 position for ideal hand cranking. Some of that is controlled by shims and then some fine tuning that affects the amount of torque applied.
 
I believe the internet settled on 100+ ft-lb; I’ve seen 120-140, 75-140, and “north of a ton”.

I set mine to 140, on the high side but used loctite, which reduces the friction.

Remember to use a six point socket. The bolt is rounded off by design - not sure why.
 
I believe it’s rounded to provide forgiveness while hand cranking in case it kicks back to provide some protection to the poor mug who has to try to start his car that way…
 
The Service Instruction Manual for the TR2 (Incorporating supplement for TR3) states on page 13 under Nut Tightening Torques that the value is 140 foot pounds.
 
I torqued it to 90. It seemed so tight I got worried I’d strip the crank threads, and couldn’t imagine it coming loose.

I usually pull one up tight with a 12 to 14-inch breaker bar and then place a 6-point knock wrench on it and give it a smack with a 3-pound hammer. The one on my car now has been on it for ten years and has never come loose. I also, never reuse the spring washer and put a new one on each time. PJ
