Difficult to engage second

Hellow all. I am new to the forum and thought that I would throw this one out there. I own a 76 MGB with the electric overdrive. When I start off and shift from first to second I have no problem. However once I am in third and I want to go back to second it will not shift back into second without first pulling the stick all the way over against the detent like I was going to shift into reverse. Once I do this it will easily slide into second.

Any thougts on this. Is this a worn syncro or what.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The second gear syncro ring seems to take the most "abuse" in those boxes, tho the later (all synchro, post-'67) ones were much improved. Can you engage it with a double-clutch downshift?

And welcome to the forum! You're just across th' border from my familial stompin' grounds.

Hey thanks for responding.

To answer your question on the shift there is no level of double clutching or levering that can be done on the stick to get it into second and wow have it tried. The only thing that works is pulling the stick over against the detent. It is not a huge deal right now but I am waiting for that faitfull day when this trick no longer works.

You may have had a shift fork come adrift (loose locator bolt). You ~may~ be able to MacGyver the side cover off to check it in the car... more likely the engine/gearbox will need to be pulled when the thing fails totally.

I kind of figured that it would be something like that. I guess I will wait for it to fail and then go from there. Who needs second anyway.
