Brake/Clutch Master Cyl.

Novice Bruce, 2 years and counting. When I rebuilt the master cylinder, I bench bleed before putting back in. Did this and once put back in I can not get the clutch to pump. Have done this twice. Brake works good. Where am I going wrong. Thanks for any help. So close to get on road but at this rate it will be winter time. Bruce

Bruce, we need a little more information. My clutch wouldn't pump even after I rebuilt it. We couldn't get it to bleed right. Turned out there was too much corrosion on the inside of the cylinder so it was history. Elsewhere, someone in another thread is having issues with either clutch plate/ forks or something - this is a bigger problem.

can you elaborate?

I had a hard time with mine and finally figured out there was pitting on the inside walls which would wreck the new seal in short order. This pitting wasn't real evident the first time I went through it. If it's the case for you you can have it sleeved. I just put in a decent used one. It was the brake side in my case and sudden brake failure makes life interesting. Especially if the ebrake cable is stretched near it's end of usefulness....

Clutch masters are not expensive like brake masters are - no need to re-sleeve unless originality matters - and, when I said corrosion, I meant pitting too

I think Bruce is talking about the dual master on his 66. Am I right, Bruce? If that is the case have you checked to see that the bleed thru hole's in the bottom of the reservois are clear. Also that the pushrod is adjusted correctly so that the piston moves back far enough to allow the fluid to fill the cylinder.

KA.

Sorry, yes it's the dual cylinder. I cleaned out the hole, maybe it's not going back far enough. On the brake side the spring has plastic piece on the end where the clutch did not. Does the clutch need a plastic piece also, the manual does not show one. I may also need to adjust the push rod nut, it may not let it go back far enough. Will check on this when I get back home, Thanks Bruce

plastic bit is proportioning valve, brake side only I believe

Yes
