TR2/3/3A Aftermarket starter for TR3 question

I need to get a new starter for my TR3a. Does anyone know anything about these ' Hi Torq mini starters ad in Ebay High torq mini starters' by a place called 'Alterstart' in Dallas?

Here is a picture of the same.
eBayISAPI.dll

If anyone has a working starter that they would like to sell I would also be interested.

Thanks very much,
Jim Lee

Forget about the picture. You have to go to the ad to see it apparently.
eBay appears to do that on purpose, not sure why. But it can be defeated:

FWIW, I have one of the gear-drive starters from TRF and I'm very pleased with it. Several things about that eBay auction make me uncomfortable, including the grammar errors and the comment about the light weight meaning it cranks faster. More importantly, the seller doesn't mention anything about the difference between early and late starters, nor how to be certain you get the one that matches the flywheel that is actually on your car. The application information doesn't make sense either (there's no such thing as a 56 TR2, but a 56 TR3 takes the same starter as a 53 TR2).

Oh, and BTW, the starter in the photo won't fit your TR3A properly unless perhaps it has had an earlier flywheel installed for some reason. You might want to ask if the warranty covers the damage to your ring gear (and the labor to replace it) in case they ship the wrong starter.

From my experince e-bay should be your second option for new parts. I would get the starter from the big three or BPNW. Any problems and they will work with you. I.E. listen to Randell above!

I got one from Ted Schumacher and was very satisfied with it.

I second that suggestion (although I've never bought one myself). Ted is one of the folks that actually developed these and -- AFAIK -- actually builds his own, and they're only $200 from him. Plus, as a 40-year-plus veteran of Triumph sales, service, racing, etc., he knows the cars inside and out.

Some of these hi torque starters need the mount plate rotated so the electric motor clears the block, or to give access to one of the mount bolts to the engine.

Always loctite the two 1/4" flange to electric motor bolts - they have a habit of dropping out into the clutch housing with unhappy consequences.

As said, buy from a recognised supplier. Occasionally auction sites can be a means of quitting seconds, blems and wrong multi-fit items that only partly mesh and chew out in no time. I've seen a few disasters with these starters.

It should be well known now that there is one starter for the early "shrunk on" ring gear and another for the post TS50000 "bolt on" ring gear. Some suppliers don't appreciate this subtle difference and a mismatch always ends in tears.
