TR2/3/3A Aftermarket headlight relay mounting options TR2-4

Hey guys,

Just picked up a set of uprated Cibie headlights from Daniel Stern. Came with two modern relays. I know some people on the list have installed relays for their lighting and I'd like to know where you physically mounted them.

Obvious choices to me on a 3 are the bulkhead by the turn signal relay or perhaps on the inner fender underneath the apron.

Some pics of what you guys have done would be great!

Thanks,
Gavin

Here's a pic but it is for a TR4 (since your subject line was '2-4') but is rather unique to that model as the connections between L & R lights already sit so nicely on top of the rad shroud.

Everything is in original colors (which is nice), the existing harness was not cut or changed, the only additional long wire was a blue run back to the control box for power.

I used one relay for high and another for low... there are certainly many other combinations you can do, your kit may dictate what you use.

Still somewhat experimental, but here's what I'm trying. I'm using a separate relay for each filament, so I can have separate fuses for each side (meaning a fuse failure only knocks out one light). And I wanted the relays hidden, so they are mounted on the back of the headlight bucket.

Only visible modification is an extra purple wire to the front apron

After seeing how neat Geo's installation is, I probably won't use the relay sockets on the other side.

Great ideas guys! Putting the relay on the headlamp bucket is brilliant- out of the way, and there's only one long wire run. And if you run it from the starter it's even more out of the way.

Question though (maybe a stupid one) Are you running a purple power wire to each relay? Or jumping the power from one relay to the next?

I'm going to run a separate purple wire, from the additional Lucas fuse box I've located on the bulkhead near the original fuse box. I thought about hiding it as well, but decided against it.

I've had several bad experiences with long, unfused wire runs; you might say I'm kind of allergic to them now.
