1975 XJ6C dashpot stromberg oil???

Hello all,

I have received my beautifully rebuilt Stromberg 175cd-2 carbs and am need to know the proper oil to use when filling the damper/dashpots... I have benn told to use SAE30 grade, 20/50w, and SAE20 electric motor oil............ if anyone has a good suggestion, please reply to this post.

I am lost in Stromberg heck.

Hello Brian,

I have always used multigrade engine oil, i.e. normally 20-50. I don't think that you would notice any difference in performance if you use a straight 20 or 30 SAE grade either. Engine oil is usually to hand so is convenient.
The function of the oil and the little piston on the cap is to stop the (main) piston from opening too quickly when you stand on the accelerator which would give a flat spot due to momentary weakening of the mixture.

Thanks for your help. I went with 20/50 on my TR3 SU's and never had a problem. Tomorrow I will be installing the new fuel lines and the carbs. I can't wait to drive the car as I have only driven it once since I bought it last July. The second time I started it the rear carb burst into flames destroying all hoses, wires and the battery on that side of the engine. Needless to say I am trying to be extra cautious with every detail to avoid another disaster. Thanks again,

Castrol used to make a motorcycle fork oil in 20w. I always used 20w fork oil in the dashpots for my TR-3A, TR-4 and MGB. If not still available, I recommend 20w non detergent oil. I do not suggest using a multiviscosity oil because of the way it acts at different temperatures.
