TR6 1974 tr6 allison xr700

allison xr700 ignition. great spark from coil hi lead. no psark at plug. bad trigger or bad box. had one on another car years ago. it would fail intermitally. not my car but simullar issue. ditch it for new xr or pertronix? thanks!

thanks all for replies. i agree with starting with new cap and rotor. going back to points is a good option. i will continue with trouble shooting and post updates. have a great weekend!

Had the similar issue with a petronics..before you throw parts you may need to investigate the need for a ballast resistor. In addition... call the mfg help line to troubleshoot.

I agree 100% with Nutmeg!
While I’ve had great luck with electronic retro kits in my old American junk ( Pertronix in my wife’s 65 mustang and Allison in my 65 Chevy truck, both DD’s) the only electrical problems I’ve ever had in almost 50 years of Triumph ownership was when I tried to convert to Pertronix. Went through several coils and igniters. They always promptly sent me new parts, but could never tell me why they failed. Switched to Standard brand points and a Bosch blue coil and have had several years of trouble free driving. Just my experience, I know others have had no problems.

Have gone down that road and switched back to points. The solution may be in the parts...but.. the petronix guys sent me diagnostics that were excellent...but to no joy. Still think it lies in the ballast resistor...but so what ..done playing with it.

I’ve had a Pertronix in my TR6 for the last 17 years and haven’t had any problems whatsoever.

If you have a strong spark from the coil, the box is obviously ok and the problem is between the coil and plug wires. Probably something is broken inside the cap or the wire isn't pushed all the way home. The CD systems generate very high voltage so carbon tracking can be a real problem.

1974 tr6 spark update. installed new Fast electronic ignition from Moss. problem solved. owner says car never ran this good. Yea!
