Two steps forward, one step back

Better day in the garage, but not without problems. Got the refurb steering rack mounted and attached to the hubs. New tires mounted and balanced. Put driver's side on, no problem. Passenger side wheel won't fit on the hub. Looks like a couple studs may be bent. This is a hub I had to replace since the PO chewed up the old one and the bearings wouldn't seat.

Looks like I'm going to have to pull the hub and install new studs. I'm kinda afraid to try and straighten them for fear I'll weaken them.

Also got the new exhaust manifold installed with the rebuilt carbs and intake so it's been a much better Saturday overall than last week!

Still can't loosen those heater box screws despite a new posi drive......

Just whack em with a hammer & they'll fall out...then you can push 2 more in their place.

I just hate to have to pull the hub after all the work I did on it. I wish I could knock them out with the hub still on but it looks like the rotor would block them from coming out.

A couple of those heater screws can be gotten to with a pair of vice grips if you are lucky.

Yep, gotta pull it.

Or cut the tops of the screws off so you can remove the heater then remove the rest of the screw.

Thanks for the tips, Jack and Tony, I'm going to go after the heater box today so I can work on that battery tray rust hole.

And put in an order for new wheel studs.

Those little heater screws are usually rusted in place...when I have that problem, I try to drill them out without affecting the threads in the captive nuts (smaller drill bit)...that way, what's remaining in the nuts is easy to push through before you install new stainless screws.

I have a very old Harbor Freight "hammer impact" tool (very fat screwdriver type thing that you bias some and them hit with a hammer) that does an amazing job of loosening rusted crosspoint screws (also works great on my motorbike engine screws). IIRC it was only about $10.00 and worth every cent.
