TR5/TR250 TR250 wheels on a TR4?

I just bought a 1964 TR4. I will post a foto of the car when I figure out how to post fotos...

The car has stock steel wheels and I want to put wire wheels on it. My question is whether there are any technical issues or clearance problems with using wider TR250 wheels on a TR4?

The tires on the car now are 195/65R15. From what I read on this forum, it seems these tires are too wide for 4.5" wheels, they should be on wider wheels, like the TR250 wheels. But can I put TR250 wheels on my TR4 without problems?

Thanks for your help!

Doug-

Welcome to the forum. TR250 wheels should be no problem. I run with 15x5.5" KN alloys on my TR4, no clearance issues at all.

If you go with wire wheels, you should consider 1/4" spacers to retain the wheel studs, otherwise you will need to cut them down when you mount the wires.

Regards,
Randy

Thanks Randy. That's very helpful. I have been looking at different wheels and am leaning toward Dayton wheels (from The Roadster Factory). I think that the TR250 wheels can be silicone sealed for tubeless tires. The TR250 wheels also have 72 spokes, which I've been told is stronger than the 60-spoke wheels. Seem like a good idea? any other suggestions?

Regarding the studs, I am planning to put in shorter studs, that come with the hub conversion kit.

Welcome to the forum. The 60 spoke wheels are strong enough for your car. If you plan to race or autocross the car regularly, you should consider 72's.
Sixty spoke wheels are much easier to clean and are less expensive.

Doug-

Bear in mind mind that the rear studs on the TR4 are threaded on the the hub, and peened over. There is a topic or two on this forum about this. I have the opposite issue as I'd like to change out short studs for long but getting those rear ones out takes a little work.

Randy

However, when converting to wire wheels, it's easy enough to just hacksaw the original studs shorter without removing them from the hub.

Believe it or not, this is the factory-recommended procedure.

Wish they had a factory-recommended procedure to make the short studs longer! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Thanks everyone for the advice & suggestions. No one has said that the wider TR250 wheels might be a problem, so I guess that settles it. Now I need to decide if it's worth the $1500+ cost...

Also thanks for the suggestion to use the 1/4" spacers. That's easier than shortening the studs, and more readily reversible if/when re-mounting the original steel wheels.

Randy, for lengthening the short studs, maybe a new use for viagra??

Doug,
Just watch the torque on the rear wheels as those threaded studs have been known to strip. I removed all of mine and have conventional studs pressed in from the back.
I use the spacers from revington and have put lots of miles on the car with no issues.

I get a lot of unsolicited E-mails for products promising to do this, but I remain a little skeptical /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
