TR4/4A Difficulty Level Opinion - Differential Gasket Replacement 62 TR4

Hi All, I noticed that my rear diff is leaky and looking at it I was wondering how difficult it it to drain it, open in (6 bolts) replace gasket, cover back on and refill. Its seems pretty straight forward if Moss has the gaskets. Not guarenteed to fix the leak but couldn't hurt right? Am i missing anything - seems the brake line is kinda in the way but shouldn't pose too much issue I don't think.

Also if i get it opened, should i clean out the inside with any suggested solution before re-gasketing and closing back up? Thanks

Easy- even I can do it.
but good gasket goo both sides of the paper gasket works best. I use welseal for all these applications.
i think it’s the pressed metal diff cover you have, so worth running a straight edge (ruler, small spirit level, etc) on the tin cover facing edge. Especially around the hols and tap any flat that need it.
or upgrade to an ali one off a different model. This is my LSD version.
as for cleaning wipe out what you can reach at the bottom of the diff and the tin cover. You could use a spray brake cleaner and give it a good blast and let the stuff run out ? But it shouldn’t be too bad.

which this year I braced the axle tubes. But a step too far for you.

I use petroleum tolerant PTFE tape on engine oil drain plugs in my daily drivers with no issues…just make sure your using a tape that is not going to deteriorate in the presence of hydrocarbons (it’s either pink or possibly yellow in colour).

My experience is the store bought gaskets are too thin and cheesy. I purchase some heavy gasket paper and cut my own. Some people simply use some form a gasket and lay a heavy bead and do not tighten it down for a day.

When you fill it, use a good 75/90 synthetic such as Amsoil racing lube or your own flavor,
it will be 1000% better than what was in it....

My rear differential was leaking a bit. Solved by a proper torquing of the bolts.
May want to try that first if you haven’t already.

Speaking of which does anyone know the proper torque specs for the cover bolts? I'm not finding them in the manual but also I dont know the proper name which could be the problem.

They seemed not so tight when I pulled the cover off. Also there was no gasket at all. I have a gasket and rtv gasket goo. Also thread tape. Figuring this should solve the leak.

I believe it’s the rear cover attachment.
