broken spoke

I have a new set of Dayton 72 spoke wheels. Actually 5 years old, but not used much. About 2,000 miles.

One of the short spokes broke.

Any reason I should not replace it myself, or do I need to send the wheel back to Dayton? Dayton wants $50 plus I need to pay shipping both ways. (out of Daytons 2 year warrentee).

I've removed the spoke, not problem. No problem putting a replacement one in. But thought I should ask here before assuming it's OK to do myself.

Replacing the spoke is not a problem, but making sure the wheel is true after that is something else. But just replacing one, assuming you don't tighten it too much, or leave it too loose, shouldn't cause much change. Best approach would be to have it trued after replacing the spoke. There should be someone out there that can do it for a reasonable price.

Roger, there is a guy named John in Santa Cruze that is a wiz with wire wheels. He use to work with the where wheel people in Fresno before they moved. He will true the wheels and everything at a very, very reasonalbe price. Nice guy and you get to watch. You can drive down and save the shipping. I'll look up his invoice if you'd like. I think there is some caution with older chrome being more fragile. They may have be out of tune causing stress to break one. Best to have them professionally trued and tuned. John will teach you how. I think many on the west coast have used him.
